I've always been told to run a heavier weight oil so when the engine gets hot it doesn't thin the oil as much. But, is there too heavy an oil? Wasn't sure if it was too thick (15w-40) if it wouldn't flow right in an engine not designed for it or if it would blow out some seals or fail an oil pump.
I figure some people will run different oil from a stock engine than a modified one...
What are the rest of ya using?
I use any brand 20w50 or 15w40 with a quart of Lucas and a fresh filter. If you wanna go all out, use a full synthetic. Same thing gets used in my 40 hp 3 cyl or in my 400 hp 350. Really thin oil (5w30) will boil and turn to sludge when the engine gets really hot. The higher the second number, the higher the heat tolerance. The lower the first number, the easier it will flow on a cold start. That is why late model engines that are still fresh require 5w30.

I run the thickest weight synthetic that is on sale and a bottle of Lucas.
I'm gunna be running amsoils 15-50 dominator series oil in my new 2.3 this yr.

Thanks for the oil 101, never really knew what the first number meant. I didn't even know they made a 20w/50. And a quart of Lucas...what? Oil treatment? They have so many products! Amsoil? Thats some pricey stuff, but it works, I have the oil analysis to prove it.
ya its def not cheap, but with a new built motor thought i would give it a shot. And wont have to change this oil after every derby like i would with regular oil.

the lucas oil treatment is good stuff also i ran one of my 350 motors for ten min with no filter and oil in it and it never so much as maid a tick motor still runs to this day as far as i kno this was all after the motor had lucas ran threw it in 4 different heats
