For my front room I have a flat screen sansui and it came with the box in it, I just added rabbit ears and I get 3 PBS, abc, country music channel, fox, and old tv channels for my station...... This has been for a solid year, I kinda like it but think its time to upgrade

John, dunno about newer TVs, but my old one, you had to get a digital box and hook it into the antenna jack.

If you're hard up for money, you could really entertain yourself if you sell your TV, get a big box, cut a hole in it, and pretend to make your own TV....I mean, that's what I'd do....

You'll need some kind of rabbit ears/antenna to get more channels/better reception. I'm not sure if your tv has the box built in, but like tbrell said...if not you'll have to pick up a digital converter box. If all you really want is your local news/weather channel it should be fine.

Keep in mind if you have good internet, you can watch all kinds of tv through it(and check your weather/news on their websites). You can buy a cable from most electronics stores to hook your computer up to your tv and watch through it instead of your monitor if you wanted to do that.

If you watch a lot of movies and shows, netflix would be a good option for you..around 8 bucks a month for unlimited movies and tv shows. http://www2.netflix.com/HowItWorks

Any tv from the last year or two should have the digital to analog converter built in.  Just hook up some rabbit ears and you'll get some local channels.  

I'm in the process of cutting cable out myself, but I'm a tech nerd.  I've got multiple computers hooked to tvs across the house.  Running software any tv shows all of my digital movies i've acquired, all my music, and then a lot of shows available across the net.

The biggest thing you can't get or not easily is live cable sports.  

there are actually quite a few free streaming sites out there that have them along with ppv events...a lot of them were just shut down within the last month, but are already making their ways back.

yeah they are out there, I just wouldn't trust it if your dreams are set on watching the big game/fight.  As they can be shut down and often are just before big events. Last year a few got taken down on super bowl sunday.

Going through the same thing I went on amazon and bought a antenna for my area, you can find a site off google or something that shows what type of antenna you need, my area sucks so i bought one for the roof after i installed it i got around 20-30 tv channels, we also have the netflix for 8 bucks it sure beats paying the cable bill every month

newer flat screen shouldn't need a converter box, depending how far you are from the major market cities where they broadcast from will tell you what size antenna you need. if you are 40 miles or more from the cities that the stations come from, the bigger the better.
