Reasons why ones better than the other. Like old school drivers build there own stuff and try to save money, new school buy everything price dosen't matter. not trying to make any body upset just want opinions.
im pretty new school... i buy most of my stuff... i am a welder i weld everyday and can fabricate, i have... i just dont have the time, i live in a town 60 miles from my car so i only have weekends to work on it, so i spend that time actually building the car instead of parts
Old school uses rear end till rear end gone then uses front, protect front end at all cost, new school use front end when demos over rear end has hardly any dents, didn't learn how to back up in drivers ed.
im in the middle buy what i can i.e rearend, trans, motor eveything else has been fabbed also drive with the front mostly due to i hate backing up and get harder hits with the front then the back and its easier to stub a car then build the whole thing
I guess I'm old school when it comes to building my own parts
Yet new school on the track by driving forward
I'm as old school as you can get. Give me old iron over vics. Give me Stock derbies where stuff bends instead of these full weld bounce off each other protector shows. I make my own parts when ever i can (except fuel cell, don't play around with saftey). I drive old school keep my nose in the corner and use the ass up. Keep everything low budget. Proud to say i will never shut a car down on the track to protect my investment if a bumper comes off, I'm outnumbered 5-1 or whatever. I'll keep running it till they take me out or i get the win. Then no matter how bad of shape its in I will always get back out for the consey or feature if at all possible. Won't play the derby politics game of making tech line deals, if your on the track your gonna get hit. I'll shake your hand afterwards and even give you parts to to fix your car, then go hang out and have a beer afterwards but on the track everyone is fair game.
Old school reads rules, build car, wreck car have fun shake hands with other drivers afterwards and drink a few beers. New school read rules bitch to promotor because rules are not to there liking, demo or not demo, upset because didn't do good goes away mad, not all new school drivers are like this. Wizard you demo like me.
I am definately old school. Build all my own parts, fabricate everything myself and I use the back end until it is gone, then turn it around and finish the job with the front.
Kind of in the middle. I build most parts have a low budget. However like to drive foward. My theory is it is just a car I can build another one lol. P.S. have never won a car demo 2nd 4 times. The first loser lol
Gary and Wizard, I'm with you guys all the way. I love demos but hate what they have turned into.
My age says new school generation but im 100% old school. if i couid id wear an open face helmet and sun glasses. there is no drive in the tranny till i cant see out the back window. I build all of my stuff. some times it works sometimes it doesnt. Low budget as it comes. ran a suburbon till it dog tailed about total of about 6 times and i think i could have gotten one more out of it. i got a fridge full of beer and that comes first in the shop. I dont get in the BS, but rather drink a beer and be entertained by it. i do 90% of the work myself by myself. just there to put on a show and piss off the whiners.
I am 21 but the way I put a car together and the way I drive is old school. I guess I can think my dad for that. lol I don't put much into the cars. I drive in reverse and keep it floored. I don't go out there to win it, I just go out to have fun and tear something up. lol I get crap from other drivers because I will in their opinion tear the car up then cut and hammer and run it again until the car can't move or nothing is left.
its not about building your own parts to me what seperates an old school driver and a new school driver is that the old school guys got out shook hands and borrowed parts, do you see that anymore? NOT OFTEN!!! im new school, i buy some parts but make some of my own, i cant call myself an old school driver cause ive only been doing it for 7 years but ill let anyone use a tool and ill shake anyones hand after the derby too!!!!
now that he added more, i will too... im stuck in the middle, im the new generation... i buy all my parts and have most of the new fancy parts... i use both ends the whole time and like to put on a show with both end... i loan out tools, hell ive even loaned out my shop and not afraid to shake hands with anyone and sit around and drink some beer after (i love beer)....
I build my cars to the rules with some homemade and some new school parts. I run them until they wont run anymore. I usually pick a few targets and stay on them until one of us breaks. I hit with the front, back , sides, whatever I can.
Im old school been doin this 33 years, number one goal was to wreck a car, if you placed that was a bonus, drivers forget theres fans that want to see wrecked cars, thats why were all there.

I'll second that
I'm out there to put on a show, let it never be said that i didn't wreck something while i was out there. It can be you, it can be me but it WILL be Wrecked.
Based on your criteria, definitely old school. I haven't been doing this long, but I have only two parts on my car right now I did not build myself. It's amazing what being on a tight budget will get you. I also use the rear until its completely gone, and then I start hitting with the front. After watching vhs tapes of old county fair derbies, I am also old school in that my engine dies when it gets hot. Lol I have never broken a stick until I had nothing left, never shut down (on purpose), and my only goal is to make enough hits and big enough hits that I enjoy watching the tape after the derby.

Not near the truth.... Real old school guys like my Dad don't know what R was because all they drove early in their years were hammerheads..... So now we mainly drive Caddy's..... I use to be pretty good in R because all the breeds we drove through my years.... Not so much now.... And we hardly buy anything for our cars other then welding rods/wire/gas/o2/tune ups.... We have it all and can make it if we don't.... But most on this site will consider us behind on derby..... I just like to keep it simple and consider myself "old school" even though I'm 28.... With 15 years driving derby exsperience.... My Dad has closer to 30 years under his helmet... And if I had to buy all those extra bolt on parts to compete in a derby I'd probably quit..... Or just do the occasional chain n go shows we have around....

In our particular case, 2nd place is the last loser.
Mostly old school here, with a couple of new twists.
