i dont think they made a "big bearing" 28 spline ford 9"

where is the axle breaking at???

do you know what hits broke the axle and how long you kept driving afterwards?

are you using new bearings each time you put the axles in?

sounds like you might have a bent housing or just bad luck......... i retired one of my 9 inch rears because i pulled my centersection out for another rear to find out that it was eating the splines up.......... wasnt sure it was the housing but on a non built rear I would rather set up a fresh one.....jmo though

get 31 spline axles,,, they won't break,,, only bend,,, 

Get rid of the Ford 9 inch, and put a Chevy back there.

had the same problem with a 10 bolt,,,,,the 28 spline can't handle the low gear,,,,,

FordPower...yes they make 28spl big bearing axles....there are 2 different styles however. 1 is a sealed bearing(deemed a big bearing) and the other is a tapered roller bearing (far superior in strength)

Couple different things could be causing this and this is just a shot in the dark as I can't see the housing for myself, but as said above...it could be bent which puts a lot of stress on the outer portion of the axle, usually on the bearing which will cause premature failure. They are coming out of the housing because the actual bearing is coming apart and all that's left is the inner race. The bearing retainer WILL NOT hold the axle in if that's all thats left on the axle.

 My best guess and that's all it is....is that your spitting axles out because you are getting hit while under power. That is when an axle is most likely to twist off the splines. My best advice would be....either keep your head on a swivel and watch for the wheel shots coming...or upgrade to something bigger and stronger. 31spl would be your cheapest way to go...IMO

next time you have it out look to see if its bent. its alot easier to tell when the housing is out of the car...

It may be as simple as taking your foot off the gas or it may be as easy as running a softer wheel/tire combo. That would be something else to take into consideration. I ran 28 clipper rears for years and never had an issue. Broke 1 axle in 10yrs before I finally upgraded. Does rear you're using have brakes? That work? Another thing to consider in slowing the wheels down faster
