these do come in handy when your going on long trips to get cars. i have a tom tom XL 335 SE . it comes with life time map updates free and traffic free. it has lane guidence.(if theres 3 exits in roughly the same spot to choose from it tells you ahead of time which lane ya wanna be in) i like it. like you said it dont tell ya what side of the road your destination is on but ..... you can choose your own route if ya dont like the one it chose for ya. just have to put in a destination on the way. its never steered me in the wrong direction. i got mine on sale around black friday it was like $80. so it was probably normaly $100. look on Amazon you can find some great deals there on these. I chose the Tom Tom cause of the free map/traffic updates and the lane guidance and the fact you could route your own route. Garmin and others did'nt have these options then but they may now.hope this helps

RadioShack is usually cheapest on tomtoms. Always have them on sale. Just depends what features you want. Everyone I know has tomtoms.
