How Would a 70's Style Ford Hold Up? Never Have Touched a Truck Been Tossing it up in the air running one, Found a 70's Style Ford Not Sure actually What Year, was in some weeds at a costumer's house i did work at asked about it and he said 50 dollars.
demopunk9x
I can't say I know alot about building trucks but sure it would be tough I would pick it up even if you deside not to run it it would be nice scrap for 50 bucks
Tman21
I've been running '73-'79s (dentsides) the last few years and I like them. The backs are pretty tough but you've gotta be careful with the front. Especially if you aren't allowed to swap bumpers. All in all they're pretty easy to build
crookeddemo
What about Highboys. How are the fronts. They look tough as hell.
would a 62 f350 be any good.
sikedude
From off-roading experience, a major weak spot on the 80-96 is at the front cab mount hoop, where its welded to the frame. Had 3 trucks crack in the same spot.

For $50 I'd pick it up part it out then scrap what you can't sell.

Im looking for tips on early 60s straight axel fords. Never built a straight axel and looking for some to do tips and not to do's on the fronts. I would like to get the front bumper higher and front stiffer. I've heard they can be tanks. Thanks for all the help.
tnt
I really wouldnt be that hard to get it higher up in the front, best way would be stiffer leafs or have the current ones on it arched or hypathetically thinking you could use house trailer or diesel pickup leafs on the front
hammerinc131
Thanks for the tip I'm looking into flat stacking or something of that sort. I've see people chain the front on the dodges is that something that should be done on all straight axels

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to mount a small block chevy into a late 80's to early 90's f 250?
andyh23
Weld plates off the cradle that will line up with your Chevy mounts they should have to run back towards fire wall then sit motor in tac mounts pull motor and weld solid you could also run a gusset from the bottom of the plate angled to the cradle

Ok boys, if all goes well I'll be trading my 75 buick regal for a 66' F250 today. Personally I think I'm getting the better deal what do you guys think? So I know these trucks are beasts. Lets hear all the tips/tricks you got. Weak spots if any? Im looking to do a engine swap as it has the stock set up. Debating on a SBM 318 or SBC 350 or a big block cause I love hearing those tear up the track. What front bumpers work well on the fronts. Also bumper, no bumper or tail gate drop for the back? I thought about moving the front bumper to the back and dropping the tail gate and then possibly a 80's crown vic bumper for the front (why? its what I have on hand). Tell me what you guys think?
dontknwhowtoweld
First I would convert the front suspension to leafs. The only bumper I would put on these trucks are a pointy. Everything else will be junk. I always ran a rear bumper on my trucks.

pacman23
Well i'd love to get my hands on a pointy, but the chances of that around here are slim. All the scrapper boys run derby cars too and there is a lot of them so they get to them before anyone else here does. What would be the next best thing? What size tires do you guys run front and back? And whats the best way to convert the front to leafs?

How strong is a 72' ford its the dent side one like shown above. The frame is boxed between the transfer case to the front cross bar, but the front foot is c channel again. it feels solid and not a lot of rust so any input would be great . if some one wants to text me i can send a pic to post on here.
getbent
Anybody ever seen one of these run.

They are good trucks! I believe the black in green truck that rolls the red truck in this vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9B61k4tfy4&feature=related is around that year. He was taking names

getbent

How are the 94 3/4 tons, basically want the truck for the motor, but wondering if the truck is worth the build?
513monster
I'm not sure if 94 is one of the "swiss cheese" frames or not, but if it is crush it(unless you can plate the entire frame). I wouldn't even drive one of these on the road, thats how unsafe i feel they are...look at the frame

only the 80-83ish fords were that way..... the 90s were
wccal
so.... yay or nay? im allowed a little extra plating, not much
nh437
i would...if its a rust free truck and you can weld the inside body seams they can be pretty tough trucks...also dont use the front end
andyh23
Where are you located is take the frame off your hands
pickupman6

crazykid147x

87-96 How are these trucks for derby? Any tips of these? F-250 if that matters any. 2wd

Depends on what you run against. If you are running against those same years you will do alright but IMO they will get smacked around by the 60's and 70's trucks with the same rules. Also 2wd front axles are no bueno. IMO you need a 4wd front axle or straight axle from the 60's to compete.

I have been looking at a 78 ford but it's a step side. Question is will a regular box off a 78-79 fit on these frames just the same or is the wheel base too short? thanks.
607ballzbe
If its a step side shortbox then yes a regular short box will fit it...
inletcrew
Does anyone got any videos of a 79 running? Trying to see how they like to bend.
andyh23
Right behind the shock tower and under your feet
getbent
Whats the best front axle to put under a 72' f250 its going to be leafed too.
backroadsdemo
Ran a late 70's ford and it was tough. If cab hadnt been rusty I would still be running it... jmo
reece15
if itd a 3/4 ton 4x4 weld front leafs or strap them an but a good gas tank protecter in the bed an itll never bend..
tude
Welding leaf springs will make them brittle from what I recall.....
andyh23
Yeah I wouldn't weld

I have a '79 f150 2wd thats ive been running for 3 years, through 7 derbies, two 1st, three 2nd, a 3rd and a 6th. They definatly like to bend right at the shock tower, and the front frame horns. Luckily i havent had it bend on me anywhere else. ive had three different front clips and frame horns on this truck and finally got it the way i like it. The i beam suspension also bends easy if you get hit in the front wheels. ive ran the ford 351m and c6 all the derbies, with a 3/4 ton rearend. It for sure is a hard truck and i would definatly build another one if i could get my hands on one.
Anyone got pics of a 73 to 77 high boy frame the frontsm is what I'm after to compare the highboys to the reg f250s and to see what mods mine already has. Thanx

Can anyone tell me if the master cylinder and booster needs to be moved over to run a sbc in a 64 ford 1 ton 4x4 so my headers clear . looks to me like it will be in the way. thanks for any info or advice you may want to share on this truck.
