what's everyone doing about these cars bending rite behind crush boxes? i've built 2 this year and one was tilted at crush boxes and the other was by tranny crossmember.. they both bent at the same spot.. any advice would be wonderful.

they have said to put a manual steering box off a s10 but it wont bolt rite up.. have to make a adapter plate..

Has anyone run a stock steel front and rear bumper off a bubble vic? Setting up a car for a stock show,I always run better bumpers on my cars but can't do that for this derby.

my bubble has aluminum bumpers.
I went to just put an 80's ford bumper on and the shocks are too wide to fit in the frame. I'm hoping to just grind the eyelet the bolt goes through down a bit and hopefully it'll fit. Stockish show..

a autobody supply company I deal with lists steel front bumpers for 92-95 crown vics for 60.00 new,just don't know how well they will hold up.

Does anyone know how these guys on here do the fronts that the both front frame rails go up and stay straght, Mine I tilted it at the boxes 5 inches at the bumper with a strong bumper up front and it bent right behind the p/s upper control arm. Can someone give me some pointers and the frame cant b plated.

he wants to derby it, these are the big one's the flagmen look for: no special bumpers or reinforcements, no spring jacks or blocked shocks, no welding frames to reinforce but if he chickens out i will drive it.

Yes it was hardnosed. All my hit where square. Could it b to hard of a bumper? I have another car doing the same on the d/s with the same bumper on it. The bumper is a dippy bumper packed with 3 pieces of c cannel. A-arm forword welded. My front bumper was 20" off the ground and the back was 12".

Can you atleast change it to a chevy engine and what will he be running against that should have the steel bumper which isnt to bad with what you said there not a ton you can do it will still be a decent car.

The loaded bumper maybe it. I seen one this you do some weird stuff and it had a loaded bumper. These cars unless they are stuffed wont hold a real hard bumper makes the frame rails do alot of weird things.

Ran a 94 bubble vic last night. First time in one and I was impressed with it. The front end came up just a little and I didn't notch the frame but it held up great. I would highly recommend to anyone to use the 8.8" rear end as a boat anchor as I snapped the axle. Live and learn.

Whats a basic build tips for a late 80's marquis? My rules are no tilting but i'm allowed 3 inch spacers, 3 patches per vertical seam on the doors, no welding on the frame seams, 5 patches on the trunk lid, 9 wire the hood, hardnosing allowed, no roll hoops. Can anybody help me?

I know what rules you'll be running, as I plan to run the same shows in the future.

To help the front end. Distributor protector, pulley protector.... Weld the shocks inside frame. Load your bumper

The backend, run the gas tank protector as far back as the rules say. And U down the trunk like the few cars had. Dimple/notch at your discretion.

I do not know there take on swapping a arms, because I have not run their shows yet. But if you are running the late 80's, you'll already have the larger stamped steel ones. I have found no difference in switching the newer ones to old besides when you weld them to the frame for a full weld car, you can weld a lot more surface area on the older a arms. And guys will switch to run front brakes.

For front end height, I would just put some big block springs in and see how stiff that is. Make sure you take out the rubber bump stops as well.

I enjoyed watching you throw that shocker around at van wert. Sucks you got stuck up on the wall. You were putting a beating on that chevy...

I won't be running until 2013 since I'll be in afghanistan for next year. I just hope they don't change their rules too much, tired of smash it full weld class...

Going to pick up a 93 this weekend.. Just kinda curious on how u guys think it should be built.. Going to tuck the trunk and v it.. Dimple until it goes up then notch.. With a 75 olds bumper on the back.. And a 9 inch.. For the front is where input would be appreciated.. 76 monte bumper on the front should I tilt at crush boxes crossmember or both? The reason I'm asking is cause a buddy ran same year of car and front went up fast with it being tilted at crossmember.. And the brace that goes from the crush boxes to the frame does that actually help?

its the same frame as a box vic minus the front suspension build it like you would one of those

Doesnt take much welding to put in a couple of kickers, or if your budget allows run a distributor protector up tight to the firewall/dashbar.

I've never built or ran of of these, just a few questions. Ok, one of our local promoters had his 80s+ championship finale this past saturday. To no surprise the feature came down to 5 box-vics/ lincolns. Its a limited weld show, no frame plating, no frame kickers, can't even weld the doors solid. What I want to know, is how are these guys keeping the humps from shittin out? The officials know what they're looking for, so it has to be well hidden. Also, the front ends stay arrow straight, but you're not allowed to tilt the fronts. They "sky" at the firewall, but the rails dont buckle or bend. Even the sheet metal on these cars is ridiculous. They were taking some pretty hard shots and not tearing or crinkling.

If u paid close attention to the top three they wer bagging the entire time till the very end. Not that I have a prob with any of the three but u gotta know urself that all a fanally is, is who can bag the longest

What would be the best choice for a front bumper for a stock Vic I can weld the bumper to the bracket and the bracket to the frame no frame welding I have a shocker rear a 74 Buick with turn sigs the stock steel bumper or I might be able to get a 79 ford front. And also do the 2-door vics bend any different then the 4-doors

This is probaly the best advice so far by saying driveline of choice not refering specifically to sbc.personally Idc if its ford,chevy or dodge I just know my ford motors better was raised around them.

When bolting the A-frames on the box vics... Do you cut out the piece of flat steel that is under the A-frame for the car to go up higher and weld the bolt to the side of the coil spring perch? Or do you just drill a hole through the flat steel that is there. Seems like the car would sit quite a bit higher if that was either cut out or cut and welded down to give support.

derby111, I have noticed that the 2 doors like to belly harder, but I have never ran one so I cannot give the right advice to fix or stop that.

kamala, I have always bolted through the plate under the a-frames and have never had a problem with bumper height, but your desired bumper height could be different than mine depending on how high competitors are set up.

Personally if ur rules allow I would just jack ur car up pull the rubber stops out of the a arms and well them down solid.. Or if u want more height out of ur front end u can unbolt ur balljoint flip ur top a arm up and cut that piece of angle iron out and weld ur a arm down.. Our rules say no solid suspension but we do it anyway..

I cut the bump stop off the upper arm and chain through the bracket under the arm and around the arm. It works and it's easy.

I took the bump stops out of the a arms and then cut the bump stop tab off the frame and welded it solid i had 22.5" to the bottom of the bumper with 225/75/15 front tires

haha i run the sbc in all of my cars but iv ran all three thats just what works for me good friends of mine run the other two and swear that is what works for them so i don't think there is a right or wrong just what works for you ya know

Not really. Its just a tab ur cutting off or the perch for the upper arm. If u are real concerned about it just heat it up and beat it flat against the frame

Are you sure it wasn't a MI show? j/k. So I know it's been brought up in the past and I'm not going to run the aluminum hood that came with another 94 vic but was wondering if anybody has ever ran a steel hood off the bubble tauruses. Wondering if it would fit is all. I work in a body shop and can come across some that can't be fixed. thanks

What are you guys running for a master cylinder with your booster eliminator plates to gain more clearance. I have broke a couple factory masters from my headers lately and looking to buy a different master even if I only can run front brakes

I plan on running a mid 90's crown vic in a semi stock show. I cannnot pipe the tie rods like you're allowed to do in other shows, but I can reinforce the tie rods by welding them. Should I weld the stock tie rods? Or replace them with the 1980's Crown Vic tie rods? Thanks

Keep the shocks in and push them all the way in. Weld them to the frame anywhere you can then weld the bumper on. Make sure to drill the shocks before welding on them. They like to pop if you burn through. Found that out the hard way

This is a fullsize 10 bolt housing with 12 bolt axles in it.

It has 27x8.50x15 skidder tires on it with sidewall flaps on the outside. You can see the tires just barely hang out of the fenders.

took my whole manual brake setup from 73 ford f100 take the pedal and all is only 7 bolts

If u have the choice between a 74 impala bumper and a 76 impala bumper. Definitely use the 74 and use the monte bumper before the 76 impala as well.

How strong are the actual crush boxes themselves? Have they ever twisted on any of you before bending behind them,Infront of them,spring pocket area, in front of spring pocket area. This without dp or anything else just a stock type car.

Got my body off the car right now first time doing this.We are allowed to weld firewall forward is why I ask.

ive never seen one bend in the actual crushbox without them being loaded or part of the crushbox welds breaking........ with or w/o a DP/ kicker

but i have seen them bend almost everywhere else in the nose ( kick sideways in front of the a arms, bend down or sideways at the core support when the lincolns/mercs arent shortened or the bumper caves in the center , up at the idler arm bolts, bent engine cradle, pinched in front of the firewall and behind the box from bending straight back ) and ........................................................................................................................ ......................................................................................ALL OF THE ABOVE

ran a 01 cop car frame under a box body this year...frame rails didn't bend anywhere,boxes started sinkin in an collapsin...if u look at the body bolt holes on the bottom of the crush box,the sides of each hole r almost touching,cant even get a finger in the holes

Thanks for the useful info. Sounds like I'm gonna have to beef up the crush boxes.
Now my next question.The main straight frame rail both sides have a hole that goes straight through top to bottom near the rear-end. Is this the same on all cars of this frame design or is this some sort of rear crush zone?I think I want to patch the hole up but if the techs want to know why its not there I want to have an answer for them.Example if an 80 car didn't have it I'll tell them its an 80.But don't know if it will fly with the double skin front end. And gusset CB.But my car is a bit weird I's like only half the front end is double skin.It's a late 89 car.Theres less holes in the frame than newer 91 frame or so also.It is also a police package car.Have the frames you guys dealt with been consistant?
I think what I'm getting at is strengthen one spot and will bend elsewhere.I wonder if those 03+ bend back by that rear hole with the super strong nose on them.I don't know how much force travels from the front of a car to the rear.Or if I shouldn't worry about it.Saw one bend there once but I think that was from a rearend shot.Thanks.

That's what I'm thinking... But if your missing one...I've put a truck clip on my car Just because my car was lacking one... You can pretty much make anything work with bolting and or welding.

I put a 73 Chevy front clip on a box vic... I think the sheet metal was stronger, but really didn't do much over a regular vic clip... It fit alot better than I thought it would...

Like stated use gm lowers u can even use the stock ford ones out of the square bodies.. I have a pic if u want me to post it

i bought the chevy to ford uppers from winslow goodwin good heavy mounts bolt to the block and in stock box ford lowers but if you plan on running alot more bubbles you still have to buy lowers then i would sugest a good set of weld in ones that alot of the derby product guys offer

Just a piece of 4 inch C-channel cut to 5 inches long with a hole drilled or blown in it for the clam mounts to bolt to and weld that to the engine cradle you would me suprised how much harder the front is...

Are u talking about making solid motor mounts? If so I don't like that idea at all.. Ran them before and cause me nothing but trouble on 2 different motors.. And derby111 ill get u pictures..

i looked and i don't have any pictures of the motor mounts.. but take the upper sbc mount and take the lower ford and they will fit together no problem.. but bolt it all up set ur motor in the car tack the ford lowers in undo the bolt that connects the upper and lower mounts pull the motor back out weld the lowers in and set the motor back in.. any questions u can pm me or just ask on here.. it's pretty simple

yep Vic and merc bodys will interchange. Merc is 3" longer in front of the core support mt compared to a vic

For box style
A Mercury is 3 inches longer than a Ford in front of the front body bolt
Lincoln is 6 inches longer in the same spot and has a 3 inch longer wheelbase

For bubble style
I believe a Mercury is the same length up front and a Lincoln is either 3 or 6 inches longer (I am thinking 3 but I'm not positive) and has a 3 inch longer wheelbase.

I was wondering the same thing. How do you guys get the speaker deck smashed down flat with the inside of the car? Looks like the whole speaker deck is cut out in alot of wedged cars so are they cut out or just smashed down inside the trunk?

i got a question for you guys. how you making the front end so strong? this past year i had all thread through the core support, creased my fenders, bolted the hood skin together and kicked the springs and it made it stout but two hard head on hits pushed the core into the engine and stopped it from cranking...i did have the stock bumper so im sure that didnt help much but im a cheap ass lol any help would be great

i just had a square cage around me and kickers arent allowed along with tilting and seam welds, its a limited weld show even tho i seen two tilted cars get in...anyways im thinking for this year ill seam weld a arms forward they shouldnt bitch about that and if i can find a different bumper but im still having trouble with that one

oh and its a ford 302 so i dont have a dp on the back

That dosen't mean you can't make a dp that still bolts to the back of the motor, it's a dp/carb protector

I have ran the plastic ones several times with no trouble, but I plan on getting a universal one from speedway this year to try out in one of my cars.

I wouldn't use the plastic master cylinder if u think about it heat is going to melt it then u lose brakes and lose your tranny or fluid goes everywhere and starts a fire.. Just my 2 cents use one off a older mustang

Also I've done with with the earlier style proportioning valve for drums/disc.I prefer 4 wheel brakes. anyone know of any drums that will bolt on the pre 90 vics?

Yep, 98 and up need 16" wheels if you leave the front suspension stock. I just pull the front calipers off and only run rear brakes. You can also swap on a spindle from an earlier year bubble.

we ran 15" spoke trailor rims on the front and they had a 1.5"-2" backspace to them i am pretty sure they were 6" wide and or ran the 16's with some old school 8 ply low profile types on the front my dad had in garage.

i was thinking instead of chaining down suspension in rear has anyone used allthread, the way i came up with using allthread is weld a nut on top of rearend put allthread in nut and run it through where spring mounts and through body then use a washer and put another nut on all thread and tightend down and set your rear to height u want, might not be easier than chaining but just another way to set height in rear...

thats how mine is. i have a small piece of pipe with a 3/4" jam nut welded in it. jam nut because there longer so therefore i have about 2 inches to screw into rather than 1 inch. also use it as my spring perch kinda. run the threaded rod up through the spring and into the car and use a 6 inch washer welded to the body. works good. i leave about a foot of extra threaded protruding up through the body so that i can adjust the height at the demo if need be. i also still chain it though.

So I made my own telescoping steering shaft today for an 89 crown vic. Telescopes 5" Is this enough for a car without a dp? I don't see how I can make it do any more unless I modify the steering column aswell.Might be able to squeeze another inch or so out of it...It has 2 knuckles from oem steering box(homemade knuckle on box) to the firewall.Had about a foot to work with from knuckle on steering box to knuckle by firewall so I think I did alright just used 2 square tubings. both 7 inches long. 2 inch overlap right now.

manual brake setup from mid 70s ford truck (mine came from 73 f100) i took the pedal and all just drill new holes in the firewall and bolt it in done.

Promoter going to a stock set of rules and they are not allowed any welds on the trunks, only 9 wire or bolting it. Can change the four body mounts in the trunk and no we can't run the althread through the trunk lid. We can hardnose the back bumper. Looking for a good way to build the trunk, I'm thinking about just tucking with a couple of dimples. Help and maybe pictures would be greatly appreciated.

hey i got a fuel question, is there anyway to run the stock fuel pump in the gas tank to a carb because right now it has to much pressure, the motor is too new for a mechanical pump and im just biting my time before i have to buy an actual external pump, thanks

run a fuel pressure regulator with a return line. Need a return line or u will be blowing hoses or clamps.

I run steel ford front bumpers on the back, hold up real good. Also have ran a late 70's nova front on the back, really liked that one. Even looks like a back bumper.

IMO, stock bubble rears are too weak to hold the back together. Ran one once, didn't turn out well. was too soft and vee'd in the middle, then let the passenger side blow out. From then on I run strong rear bumpers, no more problems.

Not sure who's car this is, but another example of why you want a good back bumper.

I tilted mine at the cross member this year, worked real well, easy to do. Cut a triangle out with the bottom about a 3/8" wide. Dropped front 4-5" You can kinda see where in this pic. I liked it, I'm sure I'll do it this way again.

are you talking about tilting at crossmember and at crush boxes? if so ive done it and it seemed to work awesome.. has 3 runs on the car and front has barely moved.. i cold bent by the crossmember tho..

its hard to explain.. take a chain wrap it around the frame in front of the core support mount so it catches the mount.. take the chain and put it through the rear crush box body mount hole there will be another hole in the frame take it so the chain goes inside the frame and comes back out the other hole. hook the chain pretty tight take a jack and put it on the chain and put it rite behind the crossmember and start jacking it will get the chain tight and pull the front end down and make a dent into the frame.. i would have to show you pictures or do it in front of you for you to understand.. maybe someone else can explain better

ok so im running a stock class later in the year and i wanted some opinions on what to do, its a very stock class and you cant weld the bumpers or shocks and its 9 wire only but thats just in 6 spots on the hood and no all thread, anyways my question is about my bumper shocks? do i just put a chain on my bumper so it dont fall off or do i suck the shock in as far as possible and then pull the chain tight as possible and basically hardnose it with just a chain if that makes any since...

im running warren county fair derby in MO, they have stock and modified classes im doing stock with my wagon and a modified later in the season. but anyways i had mentioned that to some friends and they said to leave the shocks extended so they take the blow but i would think eventually they would blow with a hard hit and then there wouldnt be anything solid holding my bumper on

From what I understand tilting is going to a part of the frame, and either cutting a pie slice or jacking it up and having the front and rear held down, having the front end sitting lower, it keeps the front end from coming up so fast and most definetely strengthens the front of the car

Forgot to add: I just found out tilting is not allowed, is there nothing I can do to make this car stronger? I really want to try one but no tilting for us here in California. or is there a way I can do some kind of tilting but not let them see? Yes i guess thats cheating but shhhhh

skip to about the 2 minute mark, otherwise its just me rambling on, I have a longer video showing the entire process, the cutting, lowering of the frame and leveling of the frame, and rewelding but i don't have my editing software with me since i'm at college, plus i don't think you want to watch an hour video on it.

@ derbyn00b instead of tilting why don't you try to cold bend it instead of risking being caught
I will try cold bending.... Im sure that is better than doing nothing at all.

yeah try that first and if you're unhappy with how it turns out then try to tilt by the crossmember
