If I buy, and build the car then the driver should give me the money and they can keep the bragging rights and the trophys. JMO

If I buy the car and let someone build and drive it then I only expect the scrap weight when they are done. A small cut of the winnings is approiate as a sign of appreciation, but not mandatory. Its more of a tip. At least thats the way we do it.

I have let several guys/gals run my cars. They will do the labor and transportation and pay their own entry. They can use my parts and advice. I take half of anything they win. I keep the car and parts when they are done with it. Most people that I have let do this have been rookies....just to give them a taste, so I usually end up with nothing but the scrap car at the end, but I have helped create a new addict. 

Even my own kids have this arrangement, with one difference....I let them have the chance to earn their entry fee back before I start taking my cut.

This year will bring a new and different arrangement with a new kid. Labor and transportation will be on him. He will pay me $50 per show til it's dead, to use my fwd compact and parts. We will help, or at least supervise him with the cage welding to be sure it is safe.

Listen to the ideas that have come and will come, then come up with a plan that will leave you both satisfied. If one of you feels cheated, then the deal still needs a tune up.

Well, were sorta in the opposite boat. Some cars we get from our sponsor(junkyard) and they give us the cars for nothing and when were done we take them back for nothing. We give them some of the prize money and a picture, that's framed of the car, trophy and who drove it. It's also signed by whoever worked on that car. Also the cars we do buy and let people drive don't pay for the car they just give it back and we scrap it. The rarely win cause their all beginners.

i fund and build all my cars,if you dont help build you dont drive.when someone helps build they have to pay entry fee and thats it most of the time they use my trailers  (most rookie drivers dont have a way to get the car to the track) if they win i give back entry fee and they keep bragging rites and trophys. after the derby they are eager to help rebuild and run it again because its like crack, one hit and your hooked. (helping make addicts one rookie at a time)and(trying to help the low car counts)

HATCET101, if you make it up this way, you'll get a shot at the rookie kid I just mentioned. Only reason he is getting a lil help with the cage.....I don't want to feel responsible if his cage welds suck, and pieces of the cage are flying around in his car. Julesburg's track is very large and is usually quite fast.....getting him killed or broken won't get him hooked.

This will be the first time I will have tried the pay per show deal. That way, I'm guaranteed to get a little something for the stuff he breaks, and he can still have some good cheap fun, and get his first taste, assuming that he has the motivation to do the work, which I think he does. The new kids are getting to be farther and fewer between. They are the derby future, and guys like me (pushing 40, and it's pushing right back) are closer every day to being the derby past, so I try to do what I can to encourage kids to give it a shot.

I think if you just hand it to them on a platter, they won't feel like they earned that feeling. When they know that they played a major role in getting onto the track, I think they are hungrier, and more likely to come back for seconds.

In the past I've let guys have cars I get car back or simiar car scrap wise back inreturn + money down.... I mean why should I have to go out find the good bargain tote it home and not make anything on the deal....Charge them atleast $100 + scrap.that way win or lose u get $100 profit.Here where I'm from you basically gotta pay scale price for cars...scrapping is out hand around here people buy cars only to make a $50 profit not counting wear and tear +labor etc its way outa hand around here.

Also doing this method the guy won't run off with winnings if he wins...

Unfortunately, some will bite the hand that feeds, but the same person will only bite mine once. Over the years, I've had a couple deals go sour, but overall, it has been a personally rewarding expeience for me.

You might be onto something here.... It's probaly another one of their buddies trying to get another freebe car and told em where to go!!!A signature on a piece of paper is worth no more than the person signing it.... something to think about...Also if the guy is too cheap to go out and buy a car there might be something going on there...It's still relatively easy to scrap a car without a title too if the guy removes dash and vin numbers etc...Not trying to steer u the wrong way but there are crooks out there.I don't know if this guy is a friend a rookie or whatever so these are in general thoughts.

i havent ever driven someone elses or let anyone drive mine.. if i build it im running it.. thats the fun part right? but if i had the chance to drive somebodys car and all the work was done and all i had to do was get it there and pay my way in.. i would give the owner all the money.. why keep money from somebody who pry has broken parts now.. pry a trashed car.. when i get all the fun.. a chance to run a car for free who need the prize money

Prize money??? I have personally drove for "CAR OWNERS" and split 60/40 and 70/30 and at the end of the yr when tax season comes around it don't hit the "CAR OWNER" at all... So you should think of that a little bit. If you as the driver wins a 1000.00 show the owner gets for a 70/30 split 700.00 you get 300.00 and at tax season on your 1099 you get all the Grand as earnings... You as the driver better keep all your receipts thru the year... LOL

Lets think about the bottom line here....  The chance of winning and owners car getting destroyed.

Payment upfront.No other way around it.It's like playing the lottery so settle for little profit than risk it all for a bigger score.Or being ripped off.Lets face it if theres a reason a guy can't find a car other than economic reasons theres gotta be more to it.It don't even appear the guy is paticular on a car either.If he was a good driver I'm sure he'd find a car on his own.So im guessing hes a rather inexperianced driver so chances of winning???

WHEN THEY ASK TO HAVE YOU WRITE DOWN YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER, REFUSE OR WRITE DOWN A FAKE ONE. WHY ON EARTH WOULD I WRITE DOWN ON A PIECE OF PAPER THAT ANYONE CAN SEE, ONE OF MY MOST VITAL PIECES OF INFO?  NEVER,WRITE IT DOWN........

for many yrs i was generously supplied cars by my uncle dave and his wrecking yard with only an agreement of half the winnings and the car was his for scrap. when i worked in the yard for him i made the same deal to other drivers. things were simpler then as there wasn't a year of prep involved. it was only a couple of weekends and a few guys building a few cars together we always were good friends and helped each other and were excited to tear up the cars we helped to build. now i have a pre-ran car, an inspired rookie, and substantial time and money invested in said car and i think i have to change the split. 70/30. i have always been about car count and just making friends. its not a business then dont treat it like one. i still help guys with cars, motors, and parts just to keep new blood inspired. but my car, they build with my guidance, they transport, 50/50, even after 20 years. just a hand shake to seal the deal

I've started a couple of guys...my deal with them was I either get half of what they win or they buy the car for what I paid for it. Never had a taker on the buy that car option...did get my money out of their winnings however.
