When bolting the a arm down to max suspension out have many of you had the bolt brake? I used half inch bolts and washers is there anything I should worry about?
Thanks Tom
I'd go bigger if you can, As long as there is no slop or movement you should be fine.
does anyone have any one have pics of this? sounds like a good idea and i wanna try it but i cant wrap my head around how to do it
i know you can do it on ford boxs and early bubbles..... as far as anything else im not sure.
bolts, use as big as you can go or they will break every time. and use the biggest washer you can so you dont rip the metal.
I bolted them down on a box Vic once and it snapped the bolt right off, dam chinamaneese hardware store bolts.
This is on a 88 caprice. I can chain them down or bolt them. Maybe I should just do big springs and put the bolt in so they think it's bolted?
Tom
3/4 ton truck springs and you wont need to worry about bolting it.
That's probobly what I'll do and still put the bolt in they don't want us using truck coils. If it's bolted they won't know. I have a set of coils out of a 2009 super duty they should do the trick.
Tom
just run chain over it and weld the ends of the chain to the frame

Use a cheap grade bolt so they will snap off and it will allow some suspension travel...JMO
I use 76 impala front springs in all my cars gives me max height and some movement.
Some people prefer solid suspension, its all personal preference. I have ran many different combos and I prefer stiff springs unless I am running out of time on the build, then the uppers get welded.
I used 2" by 1/8" flat from the a arm and welded it to the frame....easy and never broke....
i bolted it down on my bubble last year and it worked awesome i would reccamend it to anyone it seems to help out alot if you like a stiff suspension

your a arms didn't break?
i used 1/2" grade 8 bolt, washers, and nuts on my 89 town car, didnt break in the 2 heats i ran
I built a "shock" that basically holds the lower arm solid. I have had 1 rip out but 1 out of 4 ain't too bad. Bonus is if either ball joint breaks the spring doesn't come out either.
if u have the old style a arms then ur fine.. but the new style are cast.. once u drill a hole in them take a hit.. they break.. fast.. haha
i bolted my a-arms down on my bubble wagon... used 1/2" grade 8 hardened bolts and washers.... had no problems, the car ran 4 derbys
hey tomot1999 i have been bolting down arms for a few years now. i only use a 3/8 bolt and never have broke a bolt yet. and i run with old iron. here is a pic of my 87 chevy that i bolted the arms down..
yeah i used the stock arms and never had a problem with a small bolt too it didnt break at all and it held awesome would do it again too as long as our rules stay the same then it wont be a problem
